The results from my poll earlier in the week are in, and the winner, by a surprisingly large margin, was: Sci Fi. Apparently you all either think I’m a huge nerd and want to confirm it by having me nerd out over some nerdy nerd nerds, or you don’t think I’m nerdy enough, and you want to inundate me with cyborgs, androids, and thingamabobs.
And now I have a bit of a conundrum on my hands. Originally when I proposed this category I just assumed I’d end up doing Star Trek: The Next Generation, a monster of a show that I have somehow mostly avoided, despite all evidence that it is seriously awesome. But then I was poking around Netflix and discovered a number of other good options. (I’m saving Battlestar Galactica, the other show I was seriously considering, because the wife indicated she’d love to watch it with me. If you need a BG fix, check out David’s awesome piece from awhile ago). So here are some other options for you to consider. First off is another show that people rabidly obsess over, Dr. Who. Though I’m sure I will forever refer to it as Inspector Spacetime, I’m willing to give this British show a chance. Be warned, nerdly nerds, there’s only a few seasons on Netflix (the 9th Doctor, I believe), so blah blah blah not the good one etc et al nerds. Then there’s Fringe, a show with a much smaller following, but one that seems especially fanatical about promoting the show. It’s the cool indie band no one’s heard of of Sci Fi shows. Last, and here I’m maybe cheating just a bit, is Futurama. An animated sci fi comedy, the show nevertheless has a lot of good science fiction stuff in it (so I’ve heard). I’ve seen more of this show than any of the others, but not very much. (P.S. My friend Luke wrote a great reflection on the show for the Philistine.)
